U / X / Y / UP / US / UA / UU… — Commemorative series
Limited bidding runs (2017–2018 era).
GT / GTR / G1M / T1M / K1M / A1M / M_M / SIS / SUKOM / PROTON — Commemorative series
Cars, causes and events — limited JPJ runs.
H — Taxi
Taxi-only series (HW, HB, HJ…); black on white plates.
Z — Military / armed forces
Reserved for Malaysian Armed Forces vehicles.
LIMO — KLIA limousines
Airport limousine series (B and W suffixes).
Read this before quoting someone
- • Borderless since May 2014: any series can be registered anywhere. A prefix tells you the series, NOT where the car lives or drives today.
- • East Malaysia: Sabah (S…) and Sarawak (Q…) add a division letter — the exact region depends on the era of the plate.
- • Vanity series: E, U, X, Y and friends are JPJ bid runs — they were never tied to a state.
- • Letters I and O are never used (they look like 1 and 0), and Z is reserved for the armed forces.
Good to know
- Since 1 May 2014 registration is BORDERLESS — any series can be registered anywhere, so a prefix no longer tells you where the car actually lives (Kelantan D plates famously sell heavily on the West Coast).
- Sabah (S + division letter) and Sarawak (Q + division letter) use regional letters — QA Kuching, QM Miri, QS Sibu, SA West Coast and so on — which have shifted across eras.
- E, U, X, Y and vanity runs like GT, GTR, RM and MADANI are JPJ bidding series, not states.
- I and O never appear (1 and 0 lookalikes); Z is reserved for the Malaysian Armed Forces.
