Reading a Japanese engine code
- • 4G15 = 4G family (Mitsubishi Orion) · the 1 = one cam-generation/variant · 15 = 1.5 L.
- • 2ZZ-GE = 2nd of the ZZ family · G = performance head · E = electronic injection. VVTL-i lift = the fun bit.
- • A trailing T / Turbo (4G63T, 4B11T) means factory turbo; D often means direct injection.
- • VW/Audi use platform-family names instead: EA888 is the generation of the 1.8/2.0 TSI family.
Good to know
- The code does not tell you the condition — it identifies the engine family and generation only.
- Malaysian coverage is deliberate: Mitsubishi/Proton 4G and Campro families, Daihatsu/Perodua engines, JDM heroes (2JZ, 4G63T, SR20) and the common turbo continentals (EA888, N20, B58).
